Gabriel is a 2007 Australian supernatural action film set in purgatory. It follows the archangel Gabriel's fight to rid purgatory of the evil Fallen and save the souls of its inhabitants. Gabriel is the first feature directed by Shane Abbess, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Matt Hylton Todd. It stars Andy Whitfield as Gabriel, Dwaine Stevenson as Sammael, Samantha Noble as Amitiel and Erika Heynatz as Lilith.

Synopsis: The film Gabriel reveals the battle between good and evil and the fight for the human soul. Set in a dark, dreary purgatory, there is a struggle between Arc and Fallen angels for control over the city of vice, violence and cruelty, and its population of re-born souls. At present, darkness rules and Gabriel, the last of seven Arcs sent to return the light, must assume a human form for the first time to wrestle the midworld away from the hands of the lead fallen angel 'Sammael' and his task force of gun toting followers. Gabriel is young, strong an the mightiest warrior since Michael, his predecessor, who has disappeared. Sammael's victory is assured throughout the film, as Gabriel plays into his hands, falling prey to human emotions, by tracking down and healing the broken Arc angels, including the lost angel "Jade" who has turned to drugs and vice to get by. All Arc's before him have failed in their mission. Just when you think its getting good for Gabriel, Sammael has one last card to play: the secret of his own past, the knowledge of which could destroy Gabriel forever. In the darkest places of the human soul, this lone arc angel's battle with his human feelings and emotions will prove as perilous as facing the Fallen.

The experts say this is the beginning of the golden age of microbiology. Industry, medicine, the definition of life itself, are all being changed by single-celled creatures you and I can't even see. But the news is not all good. Many people are spooked by the diseases caused by bacteria: Pneumonia, Salmonella, meningitis… all caused by bacteria and passed among us every day. Infectious diseases are the greatest cause of illness and death in human history. Bacteria can make us deathly sick and often kill us. And just when we develop medicines to kill the germs, they do what they do best… mutate, find ways to resist our medicines. Now we are bombarded with products that promise to kill these germs. A meteorite from Mars has fossilized structures on it that look suspiciously like small bacteria. Scientists are coming to the conclusion that life may be far more common in the universe than we had supposed. Anywhere that there is liquid water, there is a possibility of life, and, in fact, anywhere on Earth where there is liquid water, you find there is life. And so on worlds such as Mars or Europa where there may be hydrothermal features under the ice, the prospect of finding microbial life is very exciting.

Sandro Lai compiled interviews, talk show appearances, and award presentations from Italian TV for this 2001 film chronicling most of the director's career. It hardly qualifies as in-depth analysis of either the man or his films, but it has a lot of historical flavour and some odd bits of trivia (Antonioni once visited John F. Kennedy in the White House to discuss a film about the projected moon landing). Apparently Antonioni shifted to colour before much of Italian TV did, because the brief coverage here of Red Desert (1964), Blowup (1966), and Zabriskie Point (1969) is in black and white, and colour arrives only with his disputed documentary about China.

The London nobody knows (1967) - .Norman Cohen

Made in 1967, and hosted by James Mason. I found it a sad and melancholy film, but totally fascinating. Well worth the watch. Here is an extract from a review, and a longer review in the link below that.

Part history lesson, part social commentary, Mason takes us round a condemned music hall in Camden, Spitalfields (including the sites of Jack The Ripper's murders), traditional markets, old-style cafes, Victorian public toilets and Salvation Army hostels. Upbeat it isn't, swinging it certainly isn't (although we do get snapshots of the cool kids out shopping as a stark contrast to 'real' London life). It also dwells on the real suffering and poverty on London - the tramps drinking bottles of meths on street corners, the decaying housing (in the process of being replaced by the high rise blocks) and the elderly people living out their final years in those Salvation Army hostels.

At first glance, the veteran actor seems a strange choice as frontman for the film - but he's pretty much perfect for the role. Not a man to pull his punches, he's scathing at the world around him, in particular about the loss of London's Victorian heritage and the lack of support for the vulnerable. Not that it made much difference - many (if not all) of the landmarks featured have long since disappeared. And poverty is still with us today.

The London Nobody Knows is an important social document - a fascinating glimpse into a world now lost to us and a balance to the traditional view of late 60s London as a world of music, models and carefree attitudes.

However, in reality, family matters get in the way of his business. To make things worse, he faces a power struggle against an ambitious underling.

"Allegro non troppo" is the Italian answer to Disney's Fantasia. The movie is a parody of the well-known American counterpart, featuring a lousy orchestra (filmed in black and white), a slave animator (the Italian comedian Maurizio Nichetti) and an angry director. The live action part is filled with humor in the tradition of silent-movie comedy, relying mostly on visual gags and on the exceptional mimic of Nichetti. It is in stark contrast with Disney's pedantic and boring intermissions. But it's the animation that makes this movie a masterpiece. Every piece is animated with a different style, showing the best work of Italian animators.

At the end of the US Civil War, Confederate Colonel James Langdon leads a group of his men and their families to Mexico where the Emperor Maximillian has promised them land and the opportunity to start a new life. Along the way, they encounter John Henry Thomas, a former Union cavalry officer. While suspicious of their new acquaintances, the Confederates slowly develop an admiration for Thomas and his men. When Colonel Langdon finds himself in the middle of the Mexican revolution, it's Thomas and his men who come to their rescue.

It's five days into the new century (Twentieth Century to be precise) and eccentric inventor George Wells (Rod Taylor) has invited his closest friends for dinner at his house. His friends are impatient, as George is late for his own dinner. George soon manages to show up, but his clothes are torn, and his body bruised. His friends sit him down, and George tells the story of what has happened to him. George reminds his friends of the meeting they had five days earlier, in which George demonstrated to them a prototype contraption he had built, which could travel in time. His friends disbelieved George and his prototype, and when they left, George tested out the full version, sending himself years into the future. Throughout his time travel, George unfortunately became entangled with World War I, II and III (a nuclear war in 1966) and ultimately stopped his machine upon reaching the year 802,701! He found an apocalyptic world of two species, the Eloi and the Morlocks. The Eloi are a childish, albino race whose pursuits are totally devoted to pleasure. They question nothing, and take the food they are provided with for granted. The Morlocks on the other hand, are brutal mutant monsters forced underground, who operate clanking machinery, and serve to fatten the Eloi like cattle in order to feed on them. This set-up horrified George, who had fallen for an Eloi named Weena (Yvette Mimieux). He embarked upon a mission to spark revolution. Unfortunately, George's time machine had been stolen by the Morlocks and locked within a huge sphinx-like structure. George continues his story to his friends, and it's unsure if his mission has been successful.

The Time Machine is early-sixties science fiction at it's best. Visuals are sparse yet splendid and the production design authentically recreates a ruined Earth in 802,701. Although the Eloi have a somewhat dated sixties fashion sense, they are still starkly contrasted by the brutish Morlocks, who degenerated into pure savagery.
