Hugo Claus rewrote and directed Friday as the cinematic version of his original 1969 play of the same name. Just as in the play, the story begins with the theme of incest, as the father Georges (Frank Aendenboom) returns from serving his jail sentence for that crime. Unlike the earlier play, however, the film does not emphasize that aspect of the story. When Georges gets home he finds out that his wife Jeanne (Kitty Courbois) has had an illegitimate child by a younger man, Erik (Herbert Flack), and now both of them must somehow try to return to a normal life, given their only too obvious lapses in moral judgment. As the husband and wife try hard to accommodate each other's failings and start to get to know each other again, Erik comes back into the picture. Now the three of them must resolve the deep-seated conflicts that brought them to this emotionally-wrought juncture of love and betrayal.

About Hugo Claus:

Born April 5, 1929, Brugge, Belgium, died March 19, 2008, Antwerp.

Belgian poet, novelist, playwright, screenwriter, director, and painter, renowned for his prolific energy and the versatility of his politically and socially challenging work. Many consider him to be Belgium’s greatest writer.

The son of a painter, Claus attended Roman Catholic boarding schools before fleeing to France, where as a teenager he worked in a sugar factory and as a farmhand. In Paris he began to associate with painters and poets and at age 18 published his first collection of poems.
Throughout a long career, Claus wrote thousands of poems, dozens of plays, and more than 20 novels, the most famous being his masterpiece, Het verdriet van België (1983; The Sorrow of Belgium), which drew on Claus’s own experience as a youth during the Nazi occupation. The dense, poetic work brought scrutiny to the morally suspect attitude of Flemish society toward Nazi treatment of Belgian Jews, nearly half of whom were exterminated during the war.
For years after the book’s publication, Claus was expected to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Other Belgian social and political legacies that featured in his work include the colonization of the Congo, the subject of two books, De geruchten (1996; “The Rumours”) and Onvoltooid verleden (1998; “Unfinished Past”).

Claus’s verse as well as his plays and films were controversial for their blunt treatment of sexuality, and the onstage nudity of his stage productions drew a kind of notoriety that expanded greatly in 1974 when Claus’s girlfriend, the actress Sylvia Kristel, starred in Emmanuelle, an erotic film that became a world sensation.

When Claus was diagnosed with Alzheimer disease, he elected to be euthanized, an act that is legal under certain conditions in Belgium. The decision brought the author one last brush with controversy.

Description: Why are some of the world's biggest international companies translating an absurd foreign
book into their own language, trying to hide their aims and avoid discussion about the human
rights and freedom of speech situation in Turkmenistan?
Shadow Of The Holy Book investigates the morality of international companies and the dictatorship
of oil-and-gas-rich Turkmenistan. These companies help give the dictatorship the propaganda support
that it needs to survive. Turkmenistan’s dictator, Saparmurat Niyazov, has written a ludicrous
book: the Ruhnama, the Book of the Soul, a key tool in the government’s subjugation of human
rights and free speech. Yet many international companies give their clandestine support to the
Ruhnama and help suppress the country’s voices of opposition and dissidence – in return for multimillion-
dollar business deals.
The film follows lawyer/author Kevin Frazier and film director Arto Halonen as they travel from Europe
to Turkmenistan, and all the way to the United States. The filmmakers are in search of companies
operating in Turkmenistan, particularly the companies that have translated the Ruhnama
books into their own languages, and thus supported Turkmenistan's dictatorship in the most absurd
way possible.
The film also reflects the current situation in Turkmenistan, the impact of the Ruhnama book, and
the ethics of the companies operating there. This is done through the dissidents and refugees,
many of whom have been the targets of persecution, torture, and assassination attempts organised
by the Turkmenistan government.
Turkmenistan has some of the biggest oil-and-gas reserves in the world, and this has increased
the greed and ruthlessness of corporate activities in the region. Well-known companies like DaimlerChrysler,
Siemens, Bouygues and Caterpillar praise and support the Ruhnama book, a book that
has destroyed the education system and has served as the centerpiece of the dictatorship. The
filmmakers look for corporate responsibility, and the companies duck and hide – until a couple of
business executives appear who are ready to talk and take responsibility.
The film is the story of a dictatorship, and also of the transition from one leader to the next. After
the sudden death of Saparmurat Niyazov, the creator of the Ruhnama book, power has transferred
to Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedov who has, on the surface, made reforms but in terms of violations
against freedom of speech and human rights everything has remained the same. He has
also praised the Ruhnama, and used it to increase his power. Therefore international corporations
continue to use the same techniques to please the new leader as they did with Niyazov. The
shadow of the holy book continues to stretch beyond Niyazov’s grave.

Ils retrouvent la photo d'une comédienne italienne, Dara, que Paul avait connue. C'est elle que Paul attendait. Jean est chargé de la retrouver et de la ramener. Il part pour l'Italie et à Chioggia, trouve enfin sa trace. Serveuse dans le restaurant de son oncle, Dara ne veut plus entendre parler de cinéma. Jean trouve le moyen de la convaincre : il lui paie le voyage pour New York où elle pourra retrouver son père qui a émigré au USA. Paul, jaloux, part les rejoindre à Chioggia : déjà, ils n'y sont plus. A New York, Dara et Jean débarquent dans le restaurant tenu par le père de Dara qui ne veut plus entendre parler de l'Italie.
